How weighing trays are used
Chemicals are never weighed directly on a balance pan: spills corrode the pan and carry traces from one sample to the next. A fresh tray for each sample keeps the balance clean and avoids cross-contamination, and because the tray is light and its mass is cancelled with the tare key, the display shows the mass of the sample alone.
High impact polystyrene is rigid enough to carry a sample to the beaker without bending and tough enough not to crack in handling. Like other polystyrene ware, the trays are meant for dry solids and aqueous work, since solvents such as acetone attack polystyrene.
- Place an empty tray in the centre of the balance pan.
- Press the tare key so the display reads zero.
- Add the powder or granules with a spatula until the required mass is shown.
- Tip the sample into the beaker or flask and discard the used tray.
