How dissolved oxygen is measured
In an amperometric (Clark-type) probe, oxygen from the sample diffuses through a thin membrane and is reduced at the gold cathode, while the silver anode completes the circuit. The current produced is proportional to the oxygen reaching the cathode, and the meter converts it to ppm, which for water is the same as mg/L. Because oxygen solubility and membrane diffusion both change with temperature, the reading is compensated between 0 and 50 °C.
- Connect the probe and let the meter warm up.
- Calibrate in water-saturated air or air-saturated water as described in the manual.
- Immerse the probe in the sample and stir gently, so fresh water keeps flowing past the membrane.
- Read the value in ppm once the display is steady, and rinse the probe with distilled water between samples.
