How the hand vacuum pump is used
Each squeeze or stroke of the pump draws about 15 cm³ of air out of the connected vessel, so the pressure inside falls a little with every stroke. Because the pump needs no electricity, it can be used at any bench, in a classroom without power points or on field work.
It serves two kinds of work. In chemistry it provides the suction for small-scale filtration through a Buchner or Hirsch funnel. In physics it shows the effects of air pressure: water in a flask boiling below 100 °C when the pressure is reduced, a balloon swelling inside an evacuated jar, or a column of liquid being drawn up a tube. Used for positive pressure, it can inflate or pressurise a closed system up to 2 atm gauge.

- Make sure all stoppers and joints are sealed.
- Operate the pump with steady strokes and watch the effect in the vessel.
- Release the vacuum slowly before disconnecting the tubing.
