How the analytical balance works
In an electromagnetic force restoration balance, the pan is linked to a coil in the field of a permanent magnet. When a load pushes the pan down, a position sensor detects the movement and the electronics drive just enough current through the coil to push it back. That current is proportional to the load, which is how the balance resolves 0.1 mg.
At this resolution, air currents, warmth from hands and even static on a plastic weighing boat affect the reading, so the sliding glass doors are closed before each reading. Internal calibration uses a built-in reference mass, so the balance can be adjusted after moving or when the room temperature changes without handling separate weights.
- Level the balance on a firm bench and let it warm up.
- Run the internal calibration.
- Open a side door, place the weighing vessel on the 80 mm pan, close the door and tare.
- Add the sample, close the doors and record the reading once it is stable.
