How the slotted mass hanger is used
A large-format hanger is the loading point for experiments where a few hundred grams is not enough. It hangs from a wire, beam or cord, and large slotted masses are dropped onto its stem through their slots, so the load can be raised in steps without unhooking anything. Its own mass forms the first part of the load and must be added to every reading.
In Searle's method for Young's modulus, the test wire carries a hanger at its lower end, and slotted masses are added one at a time while a spirit level and micrometer record the small increase in length. Young's modulus is then E = (F x L) / (A x extension), where F is the added weight, L the original length and A the cross-sectional area of the wire.
- Hang the hanger from the wire, beam or cord and let it settle.
- Take the zero reading with the hanger alone.
- Slide slotted masses onto the stem one at a time, recording each reading.
- Unload in reverse order and compare readings to check that the material has returned to its original length.
