How the physical balance is used
The physical balance is a lever with equal arms. The beam pivots on a knife edge resting on agate, and each pan hangs from its own knife edge at the end of the beam, so the beam settles level only when the masses on the two pans are equal. The plumb line and levelling screws let students set the pillar truly upright before any reading is taken.
The double hooks on the hangers make the balance suitable for specific gravity work. A solid is tied by a thread to the lower hook and weighed first in air and then fully immersed in water. By Archimedes' principle the loss of weight equals the weight of water displaced, so specific gravity = weight in air / (weight in air - weight in water).
- Turn the levelling screws until the plumb line hangs centrally on the pillar.
- With empty pans, release the beam and adjust the balancing nuts until the pointer swings equally about zero.
- Place the object on the left pan and add known masses to the right pan until the swings are balanced again.
- Arrest the beam before adding or removing any mass, to protect the knife edges.
- For specific gravity, hang the solid from the hook, weigh it in air and then in water, and calculate the ratio.
