How the triple beam balance is used
A triple beam balance compares the unknown mass on the pan with the moments of riders on three graduated beams. Riders on the notched beams click into fixed positions, while the rider on the finely graduated beam slides freely, giving the 0.1 g readability. The mass is the sum of the three rider positions once the pointer settles on the zero mark.
Magnetic damping slows the swing of the beam so the pointer settles quickly. Tripod legs and the weigh-below hook allow an object to hang beneath the balance in a beaker of water, so its density can be found from the loss of weight in water (Archimedes' principle).
- With the pan empty and all riders at zero, turn the zero adjustment until the pointer lines up with the zero mark.
- Place the object on the pan.
- Move the largest rider notch by notch until the pointer drops below zero, then back it one notch; repeat with the middle rider.
- Slide the front rider until the pointer rests at zero, and add the three readings to get the mass.
