How the weights and rider are used
On a two-pan beam balance, the object goes in the left pan and weights from the box are added to the right pan, largest first, until the beam swings evenly about the centre of the scale. Brass is dense and stable, and chrome plating protects it from tarnish, which would otherwise change its mass over time.
