Uses
A urethral catheter drains urine from the bladder when a patient cannot pass urine normally, or when a sterile specimen or a measure of residual urine is needed. The Nelaton type has no retaining balloon, so it is passed, used and withdrawn in one procedure rather than left in place; for an indwelling catheter a Foley catheter is used instead.
