How it is used
A venous tourniquet is applied a few centimetres above the intended puncture site, tight enough to stop blood returning through the veins but not so tight that it stops arterial flow. The veins below it fill and stand out, which makes venepuncture and cannula insertion easier. It is released as soon as blood flow into the tube or cannula is established, because leaving it on too long causes discomfort and can alter some blood test results.
- Wrap the strip around the upper arm or forearm above the puncture site.
- Pull it snug and tuck a loop under the band so it can be released with one pull.
- Select the vein and perform the venepuncture or cannulation.
- Release the tourniquet before withdrawing the needle.
- Clean the strip according to the ward's infection-control procedure before reuse.
Being latex-free, the strip can be used on patients and by staff with latex sensitivity, and the solid elastic gives even pressure across its 1.8-2.5 cm width.
