Uses
A draw sheet is placed crosswise over the bottom sheet, under the patient's trunk, where most soiling occurs. The polyethylene layer stops urine, blood, wound drainage and spilled liquids from soaking into the mattress, so only the draw sheet and the cotton sheet above it need changing rather than the whole bed. It is used on maternity, surgical, geriatric and emergency wards alike.
The sheet also helps with moving patients. With a cotton draw sheet on top, two staff members can grip the edges and slide or turn a patient in bed with less friction on the skin, which is part of routine pressure-area care.
Because it is non-sterile, the sheet is used for bed protection and patient handling on the ward, not as a sterile field for procedures.
