Uses
A Foley catheter stays in the bladder to drain urine continuously, for example after surgery, while urine output is being monitored, or when a patient cannot pass urine. Its 2-way design has two channels: the central channel carries urine from the lateral eyes near the rounded tip to the cup connector and collecting bag, and the smaller side channel fills the balloon that holds the catheter in place inside the bladder.
The balloon is inflated within its 5-15 ml range through the non-return valve with a Luer syringe, and deflated through the same valve before removal. Insertion and removal are carried out by trained clinical staff following the hospital's aseptic protocol.
Because the catheter is made of natural latex, it is not used for patients with a latex allergy. The silicone coating gives a smoother outer surface than plain latex. Size CH18 corresponds to an outside diameter of about 6 mm.
