How the model is used in teaching
Each lobe of the lung is divided into bronchopulmonary segments, each supplied by its own segmental bronchus and branch of the pulmonary artery. Because a segment can be diseased or surgically removed without affecting its neighbours, segment anatomy matters in medicine as well as in biology.
The transparent lungs let students trace each branch from the trachea through the right and left main bronchi to the segments they supply. The right lung, with three lobes, carries 10 segments; the left lung, with two lobes and space for the heart, carries 8. The hilus, where the bronchi and vessels enter the lung, is also shown.
- Follow the trachea to its division into the right and left main bronchi.
- Trace the lobar bronchi into the upper, middle and inferior lobes of the right lung.
- Count the segments in each lobe and compare the right lung with the left.
- Locate the hilus where the airway enters each lung.
