How the model is used in teaching
Urine formation is hard to teach from a whole-kidney model alone, because the working unit, the nephron, is microscopic. This model moves from the whole organ to the single unit: the frontal section places the nephrons in the kidney, the nephron model shows the course of one tubule, and the glomerulus model enlarges the filtering end.
At the glomerulus, blood arrives through the afferent arteriole and leaves through the narrower efferent arteriole, which keeps the pressure high enough to force fluid through the capillary walls and the podocyte layer into Bowman's capsule (ultrafiltration). Along the renal tubules and Henle's loop, useful substances and water are reabsorbed, and the remaining fluid drains into the collecting tube as urine.
