How the model is used in teaching
Kidney stones (renal calculi) form when dissolved salts in urine crystallise. They can sit in the renal pyramids and calices, collect in the renal pelvis, or pass into the ureter, where they may obstruct the flow of urine. The model opens the collecting system so that each of these sites can be seen in relation to the rest of the kidney.
In class, the model supports lessons on the urinary system, on how urine drains from the calices to the pelvis and on to the ureter, and on the clinical picture of nephrolithiasis and urolithiasis. It also illustrates how a stone can congest the minor calices, and the numbered key card lets students match each location to its name.
