How the model is used in teaching
A torso model shows how the organs of the chest and abdomen fit together inside the body, which a flat chart cannot do. At about half a metre tall, this version is small enough for a desk or a shared bench, yet large enough for students to lift out the main organs and name them.
Taking out the lungs opens up the chest; removing the stomach and liver shows how the digestive organs share the upper abdomen; and the intestine can be lifted out to reveal the structures behind it. With the skull cap off, the brain can be seen in position, fixed within the skull.
- Name the external regions of the torso: head, neck, chest and abdomen.
- Lift off the skull cap to show the brain in position.
- Remove the lungs, then the stomach, liver and intestine, naming each from the key card.
- Refit the organs in reverse order.
