How the model is used in teaching
The upper surface carries the three papilla types students are asked to tell apart: the large circumvallate papillae in a V-shaped row in front of the root, the rounded fungiform papillae, and the fine filiform papillae that cover most of the surface. The epiglottis behind the root connects the lesson to swallowing and the protection of the airway.
The model also displays the muscles responsible for the shape and movement of the tongue - the transverse and the superior and inferior longitudinal muscles within the tongue, and the genioglossus, which anchors it to the lower jaw. The sublingual and submandibular glands show where two of the three pairs of salivary glands lie.
