How the eye model is used in teaching
In a normal eye, light from an object is refracted by the cornea and lens and brought to a sharp focus on the retina. The ciliary muscles change the shape of the lens so that both near and distant objects can be focused, which is called accommodation. With this model the flexible lens is used in front of the class to show a sharp image forming on the retina.
In short sight (myopia) the image of a distant object forms in front of the retina and is corrected with a concave (diverging) lens; in far sight (hypermetropia) the image of a near object forms behind the retina and is corrected with a convex (converging) lens. The model demonstrates both defects and their correction, linking biology lessons on the eye with physics lessons on lenses.
