How the dissecting tray is used
At 50 mm deep, the tray can hold enough water to cover a specimen, which is how many zoology practicals keep soft tissue moist and let fine structures such as nerves and blood vessels float free for tracing. In the wax-bottomed version the specimen is pinned straight into the wax; the plain tray is used to carry specimens and instruments between the bench and the sink.
- Pick the wax-bottomed tray for any practical in which the specimen has to be pinned open.
- Lay the specimen on the wax and fix it in position with dissecting pins.
- Pour in water to cover the specimen if the practical sheet asks for dissection under water.
- After the class, drain the tray, wash it and let it dry before stacking.
