How the blow pipe is used in the charcoal block test
In the dry tests of qualitative inorganic analysis, a little of the salt, usually mixed with sodium carbonate, is placed in a small cavity cut in a charcoal block. Blowing a steady stream of air through the pipe while its curved tip is held at a luminous Bunsen flame bends the flame sideways into a narrow, hot jet that plays on the sample. With the tip held just outside the flame the jet is a reducing flame; with the tip pushed about a third of the way into the flame it becomes an oxidising flame.
- Cut a small cavity in the charcoal block and place a little of the salt, mixed with sodium carbonate, in it.
- Moisten the mixture with a drop of water and hold the block close to a luminous Bunsen flame.
- Place the curved tip of the blow pipe at the flame and blow a steady, gentle stream of air to direct the flame onto the sample.
- Heat for a minute or two, let the block cool, and note the colour of any incrustation and whether a metallic bead has formed.
The incrustation or bead left on the charcoal gives a preliminary indication of the metal ion present, which is then confirmed by wet tests.
