Spectrometer Prism

Spectrometer Prism

Product Code : SCL-LAO-11138

Quick answer: The Spectrometer Prism is a single triangular refracting prism placed on the prism table of a spectrometer to measure the angle of the prism and the angle of minimum deviation, from which the refractive index of the prism material is calculated. It is also used to study dispersion. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

The spectrometer, light source and any storage case are not part of this listing; the spectrometer is listed separately.

How the minimum deviation experiment is done

Light entering one face of a prism is refracted towards the base and leaves through the second face deviated from its original direction. As the prism is turned, the angle of deviation first falls and then rises again; at the turning point, the angle of minimum deviation Dm, the ray passes symmetrically through the prism. The refractive index is then n = sin((A + Dm)/2) / sin(A/2), where A is the angle of the prism.

Because the refractive index of glass differs slightly for each wavelength, a white-light source gives a spread of colours, and a discharge lamp gives separate spectral lines whose deviations can each be measured.

  1. Level the spectrometer and focus the telescope and collimator on a narrow slit image.
  2. Place the prism on the prism table with its refracting edge towards the collimator and measure the prism angle A from the two reflected images.
  3. Turn the prism and follow the refracted image with the telescope until it stops and reverses; this is minimum deviation.
  4. Read the telescope position at minimum deviation and for the direct ray, and calculate Dm.
  5. Work out n from the formula.

Frequently asked questions

How is refractive index found with a spectrometer prism?

Measure the prism angle A and the angle of minimum deviation Dm on the spectrometer, then use n = sin((A + Dm)/2) / sin(A/2).

Is a spectrometer included with the spectrometer prism?

No. This listing is for the prism alone; the spectrometer and light source are separate items.

What is the price of the spectrometer prism?

Prices are not published on the website. Add the spectrometer prism to the Enquiry Cart with the Add To Cart button on this page, or email [email protected] with the house code SCL-LAO-11138 and the quantity, to receive a quotation.

Does Lab Exports manufacture the spectrometer prism?

Yes. Lab Exports manufactures the spectrometer prism at its works at 11/315, Lalita Park, Laxmi Nagar, Delhi 110092, under house code SCL-LAO-11138.
