How the set is used in teaching
Laid flat on a sheet of paper in a darkened room, each acrylic shape is lit by a narrow beam or several parallel rays from a ray box. The frosted face scatters a little of the light, so students can see the ray bend on entering and leaving the block instead of only marking where it emerges. Convex shapes bring parallel rays to a focus, concave shapes spread them, and the prisms deviate the beam and, with white light, disperse it into colours.
Tracing the rays around each piece lets students measure angles of incidence and refraction and apply Snell's law, n = sin i / sin r, or locate the focal point of a lens shape.
- Place a piece on white paper and outline it with a pencil.
- Direct a single ray or parallel rays from a ray box at the piece.
- Mark the incident and emergent rays with dots, then remove the piece and join them.
- Measure the angles with a protractor, or find where parallel rays converge for the convex shapes.
