The phenakistoscope is one of the earliest animation devices, dating from the 1830s. A disc carries a ring of pictures, each showing one stage of a movement, with viewing slots between them. When the disc spins and the viewer looks through the slots, each picture is seen for only a brief instant and in the same position. Because the eye retains each image for about 1/16 of a second, the separate pictures blend into one moving image.
