Newton’s Colour Disc Model

Newton’s Colour Disc Model

Product Code : SCL-LAO-11215

Quick answer: Newton's colour disc model is a disc painted with the seven spectrum colours (VIBGYOR) that is spun fast by a hand-driven pulley and belt. At speed the colours blend through persistence of vision and the disc looks nearly white, showing that white light is a mixture of colours. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

How the model is used in teaching

Newton showed with a prism that white light splits into a spectrum of colours. The colour disc demonstrates the reverse: the eye retains each image for roughly one-sixteenth of a second (persistence of vision), so once the seven sectors pass the eye faster than that, their colours overlap on the retina and the disc appears whitish.

  1. Stand the model on a firm, level bench with the belt seated in both pulley grooves.
  2. Show the class the stationary disc and name the seven sectors in order.
  3. Turn the crank steadily, increasing speed until the separate colours can no longer be seen.
  4. Ask students to describe the colour of the spinning disc, then slow down and watch the sectors reappear.

Because paints are not pure spectral colours, the spinning disc usually looks off-white or light grey rather than brilliant white. This makes a good discussion point on the difference between mixing light and mixing pigments.

Key features

  • Seven sectors in spectral order: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
  • High-ratio pulley and belt drive lets a student reach blending speed with a few turns of the crank.
  • Cast iron base keeps the centre of gravity low, so the model stays steady while spinning.
  • Powder-coated steel pillar holds the disc and pulley assembly rigidly.
  • No batteries or mains supply needed, so it can be used in any classroom.
