How the force table experiment is done
On a force table, each string runs from the central ring over a pulley clamped at a chosen angle on the rim and carries a hanger with slotted weights, so every force is known in size (the weight hung) and direction (the angle on the 360 degree scale). When the forces balance, the ring settles at the centre of the table and their vector sum is zero.
- Level the table with the levelling screws.
- Clamp two pulleys at chosen angles and hang known loads, then find by trial the angle and load on a third pulley that bring the ring to the centre.
- Record each load and angle from the graduated rim.
- Draw the forces to scale: the first two form a parallelogram whose diagonal equals and opposes the third, and the three form a closed triangle.
- Add the fourth pulley and repeat to show that four forces in equilibrium form a closed polygon.
Resolving each force into components, F cos theta and F sin theta, and adding them gives a numerical check that both sums are close to zero, with friction in the pulleys as the main source of error.
