How it is used
An inclined plane is one of the simple machines. Pulling a load of weight W up a slope of angle theta needs a force of only W sin theta if friction is ignored, so the ideal mechanical advantage is 1/sin theta, the ratio of the length of the slope to its height. With the trolley on the plane and a cord over the pulley to a hanging load, students measure the force that holds the trolley still or moves it slowly up the slope.
Comparing that force with W sin theta at several angles shows how the down-slope component grows with the angle, and the gap between measured and ideal values indicates the friction in the trolley and pulley.
- Set the angle of the plane against the graduated cast aluminium arc.
- Place the trolley on the plane and run a cord from it over the pulley to a hanging load.
- Add weights until the trolley moves slowly up the slope at a steady speed, and record the load.
- Repeat at other angles and compare the effort with W sin theta and the mechanical advantage with 1/sin theta.
