How the pendulum experiment is done
Suspended on a light thread from a clamp, any one of the bobs forms a simple pendulum. For small swings the period is T = 2 pi sqrt(L/g), which depends on the length L and on g but not on the mass of the bob. Swinging bobs of different metals on the same length of thread is therefore a direct test of that prediction.
The same bobs serve a second practical on density. Weighing each bob and finding its volume by displacement in a measuring cylinder lets students calculate rho = m/V and rank the six metals.
- Tie a light thread to the first bob and clamp the other end so the bob hangs freely.
- Measure the length from the point of suspension to the centre of the bob.
- Pull the bob aside through a small angle, release it and time 20 oscillations with a stopwatch.
- Divide by 20 to get the period, then repeat with bobs of the other metals at the same length.
The periods agree within timing error even though the masses of the bobs differ, a clear classroom result for the simple pendulum.
