How the inclined plane experiment is done
On a smooth plane inclined at angle theta, the weight W of a roller splits into a component W sin theta down the slope and W cos theta pressing into the surface. A cord from the roller over the pulley to a pan balances the down-slope component when the pan and its load weigh P = W sin theta, provided the cord runs parallel to the plane.
- Set the board to the chosen angle on the graduated arc and clamp it.
- Adjust the pulley clamp so that the cord from the roller runs parallel to the glass surface.
- Place the brass roller on the plane, attach the cord and add weights to the pan until the roller stays at rest, or moves slowly at steady speed after a slight push.
- Weigh the roller and the loaded pan and compare P with W sin theta.
- Repeat at several angles up to 45 degrees and plot P/W against sin theta.
The graph is a straight line of slope close to 1, which confirms the resolution of the weight into components. Repeating the readings with the cart in place of the roller gives a second set for comparison.
