How the parallelogram law experiment is done
The parallelogram law states that if two forces acting at a point are represented in size and direction by the adjacent sides of a parallelogram, their resultant is represented by the diagonal drawn from that point. In the standard experiment, three forces supplied by weights on strings knotted at one point are left to settle in equilibrium, and a sheet of paper on the board records their directions.
- Set the apparatus upright on the bench and fix a sheet of paper on the board.
- Hang known weights on the three strings and let the knot come to rest clear of the board.
- Mark the directions of the strings on the paper and note the three weights.
- Draw two of the forces to scale along their lines and complete the parallelogram.
- Compare the diagonal with the third force, which should be equal in size and opposite in direction.
Repeating with different weights shows that the law holds for any pair of forces, and the same readings can be used to check Lami's theorem, P/sin(alpha) = Q/sin(beta) = R/sin(gamma).
