How it is used
A physical weight box holds a set of known masses that are placed on the pan of a balance to find the mass of an unknown object by comparison. On a beam or physical balance the object sits on one pan and weights are added to the other until the beam returns to its rest position; the mass of the object then equals the sum of the weights on the pan.
Keeping the weights together in one box means a class can return them in order after each practical, and students learn to handle a real set of standard masses rather than reading a number from a display. The set also helps when explaining the difference between mass, measured in grams or kilograms, and weight, the force mg measured in newtons.
- Set the balance on a firm, level bench and check that the pointer rests at zero with both pans empty.
- Place the object to be weighed on the left-hand pan.
- Take weights from the box, largest first, and place them on the right-hand pan, removing any weight that tips the beam too far.
- Continue with smaller weights until the pointer swings equally about zero.
- Add up the weights on the pan to get the mass of the object, then return each weight to its place in the box.
