How the model is used in teaching
In sodium chloride each sodium ion is surrounded by six chloride ions and each chloride ion by six sodium ions, giving a cubic lattice held together by strong electrostatic attraction in every direction. The six magnets in each model ion stand for those six neighbours, so the ions fit together in the alternating pattern of the real crystal and students feel the attraction as they build.
A 3 x 3 x 3 lattice cannot hold equal numbers of the two ions, which is why that size has 13 of one type and 14 of the other; the 4 x 4 x 4 lattice has exactly 32 of each, matching the 1:1 formula NaCl.
Once built, the lattice is used to explain the properties of ionic solids: the cubic shape of salt crystals, the efficient packing of the ions, and the high melting temperature needed to break so many attractions. In the real crystal, shifting one layer by a single ion brings like charges side by side, which is why salt is brittle and splits along cleavage planes; the model lets students find those planes.
