How the density experiment is done
Density is mass per unit volume, rho = m / V. Each cube has 25 mm sides, so its volume is 2.5 x 2.5 x 2.5 = 15.625 cm3, about 15.6 cm3. With the volume fixed, the only thing that changes from cube to cube is the mass, which makes the effect of the material easy to see.
- Measure one cube with a ruler or vernier callipers to confirm the side length and work out its volume.
- Weigh each of the nine cubes on a balance and record the mass in grams.
- Divide each mass by the volume to find the density in g/cm3.
- Rank the materials from least to most dense and compare the results with published values.
- Predict from the densities which cubes will float, then test them in water.
The metals turn out several times denser than water, the plastics slightly denser and the woods less dense, so the float-or-sink test checks the calculation. Beech and pine together show that density differs between two woods, and the three plastics show the same within one class of material.
