How the model is used in teaching
A water molecule is bent, with a slightly negative oxygen atom and two slightly positive hydrogen atoms. In the kit, magnets stand for these partial charges, so when students shake a cup of molecules they see them attract and join on their own, the hydrogen of one molecule to the oxygen of the next. Because the hydrogen atoms can be removed, students can also compare how hard it is to pull a hydrogen off its own oxygen (a covalent bond) with how easily two molecules separate (a hydrogen bond).
The two magnets in each oxygen let the molecules lock into the open pattern of ice, which helps explain why ice floats on water. The sodium and chloride pieces show water molecules surrounding ions as salt dissolves, pulling molecules away from the group models evaporation, and joining the ethane and hydroxyl pieces makes ethanol. The same molecules support a discussion of capillary action.
