Magnetic Needle on Stand

Magnetic Needle on Stand

Product Code : SCL-M-11100

Quick answer: The magnetic needle on stand is a 100 mm magnetised carbon steel needle balanced on a low-friction brass pivot above a non-magnetic brass pillar and polymer base. It swings freely to show north-south alignment, map the field around magnets and detect the field of a current-carrying wire. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

How it is used

A freely pivoted magnetised needle turns until its axis lies along the magnetic field at that point. With no magnet nearby it settles in the Earth's field, pointing roughly north-south; brought close to a magnet or a current-carrying wire, it swings to show the local field direction. Because the pillar and base are non-magnetic, the stand itself does not pull the needle off line.

  1. Place the base on a level bench away from iron fittings, steel furniture and electrical equipment.
  2. Seat the centre bearing of the needle on the pivot tip and let it swing until it comes to rest.
  3. Note the direction of rest and mark it as the magnetic meridian.
  4. Bring a bar magnet or a current-carrying wire slowly towards the needle and record the direction and size of the deflection.

The same set-up repeats Oersted's observation: a wire laid along the meridian above the needle makes it deflect when current flows, and reversing the current reverses the deflection.

Key features

  • Balanced 100 mm carbon steel needle aligns quickly with the field.
  • Painted tips identify the poles at a glance.
  • Brass pivot keeps friction low for good sensitivity.
  • Non-magnetic brass pillar and polymer base avoid distorting the field.
  • Robust enough for everyday student practicals.

What is included

  • Magnetised carbon steel needle, 100 mm
  • Non-magnetic support pillar with pivot point
  • Stable polymer base

Frequently asked questions

What is a magnetic needle on stand used for?

To find the magnetic north-south direction, trace field lines around magnets, and show the magnetic field of a current-carrying wire.

Why is the stand made of brass?

Brass is non-magnetic, so the pillar does not attract the needle or distort the field being studied.

What is the price of the magnetic needle on stand?

Prices are not published on the website. Add the magnetic needle on stand to the Enquiry Cart with the Add To Cart button on this page, or email [email protected] with the house code SCL-M-11100 and the quantity, to receive a quotation.

Does Lab Exports manufacture the magnetic needle on stand?

Yes. Lab Exports manufactures the magnetic needle on stand at its works at 11/315, Lalita Park, Laxmi Nagar, Delhi 110092, under house code SCL-M-11100.
