How it is used
When a distillation or reflux set-up is built, each piece of glassware needs its own clamp at the right height. A clamp supplied with its bosshead is fixed to the stand in one step: the bosshead slides over the stand rod, up to 15 mm in diameter, and the clamp is locked at the angle needed.
Cork is a gentle, slightly springy lining. It spreads the clamping force over the glass so thin-walled flask necks and condensers are not stressed, and because cork is a poor conductor of heat it copes well when the clamped glass warms up.
