How the retort clamp is used
In set-ups for distillation, reflux, titration and gas collection, glassware has to be held firmly at a chosen height and angle. The clamp's 8 mm rod is fixed in a bosshead on the stand's vertical rod; the glassware is placed between the jaws, and the clamping rod is tightened until the rubber linings close around it.
Rubber linings grip smooth glass well and cushion it, so a flask neck or condenser is held securely without hard point contact that could crack the glass. The clamping rod works through swivels in the jaws, helping them close neatly on items anywhere within the 90 mm capacity.
- Fix a bosshead to the retort stand rod at the height needed.
- Push the 8 mm clamp rod into the bosshead and tighten it with the jaws facing the apparatus.
- Place the glassware between the jaws and tighten the clamping rod just enough to hold it; do not over-tighten on glass.
- Check that the apparatus is stable before heating or filling.
