How the biosafety cabinet protects operator and sample
A Class II cabinet gives three kinds of protection. Room air drawn in through the front opening at 0.5 m/s forms an air curtain that stops aerosols escaping towards the operator. Filtered air falls over the work surface at 0.45 m/s, so the sample sits in clean air and cross-contamination between cultures is reduced. Air leaving the cabinet is filtered again, protecting the room.
In a type A2 cabinet about 70% of the air is recirculated as downflow and about 30% is exhausted, the split this cabinet uses. Typical work includes culture transfers, inoculation of media, preparation of clinical and environmental samples and cell culture handling.
- Switch on the fan and lighting and let the airflow settle for several minutes before starting.
- Wipe the stainless steel worktop with a suitable disinfectant and load only the materials needed.
- Work with arms well inside the cabinet and keep the front grille clear so the inflow curtain is not blocked.
- After work, disinfect the surfaces and leave the fan running for a few minutes to purge the work zone.
