How the Karl Fischer titration is done
Karl Fischer titration is the standard chemical method for water content. In the reagent, iodine reacts with water in the presence of sulphur dioxide, a base and an alcohol such as methanol, one mole of iodine for each mole of water. While water remains, added iodine is used up at once. When the last of the water has reacted, free iodine appears in the solution and the current between the two platinum pins of the electrode changes sharply, marking the end point.
- Fill the titration vessel with dry methanol or another suitable solvent and titrate it to dryness so the vessel starts free of water.
- Standardise the Karl Fischer reagent against a known amount of water to find its water equivalent in mg per ml.
- Add the weighed sample, sized to contain 1-50 mg of water, and start the titration in auto mode.
- Follow the RUN and ADD indication as reagent is dispensed; END shows when the end point is reached.
- Calculate the water content from the volume of reagent used and its water equivalent.
