How the squared bosshead is used
Round rods can rotate in a bosshead when an off-centre load twists them. A square-section bar cannot turn in a square jaw, so a squared bosshead keeps its orientation even when a heavy clamp or piece of apparatus hangs to one side. This suits rigid frames and custom support rigs rather than a simple retort stand.
The hexagon socket screws are tightened with an Allen key, which gives a firm fixing and leaves no projecting wing to catch on tubing or leads. On its own the bosshead holds two square members at 90 degrees.
