How the Roberval balance works
The French mathematician Gilles Personne de Roberval described this arrangement in the seventeenth century. The main beam and a second, parallel link are joined at each end by upright columns that carry the pans, forming a parallelogram. As the beam tips, the columns stay vertical, so the pans remain level and move straight up and down.
The parallel link takes up the twisting effect of an off-centre load, so a load gives the same reading wherever it is placed on the pan. In class this gives students a stable, open balance for weighing by comparison: the object goes on one pan and known masses on the other until the beam settles level. Because both pans are on top, beakers and irregular objects are easy to place and remove, and the visible linkage is a good starting point for lessons on levers, moments and equilibrium.
