How it is used
Hegar dilators are solid rods of increasing diameter. The smallest size that enters the cervical canal is passed first, then each larger size in turn, stretching the cervix gradually until it is wide enough for the instrument that will follow. With each double-ended piece covering two neighbouring sizes, every step up is small, which limits the risk of cervical tearing.
Dilatation with Hegar dilators precedes curettage, evacuation of retained products of conception and other procedures in which instruments must enter the uterine cavity.
- Unroll the canvas roll and lay the sterilised dilators out in order of size.
- Pass the smallest suitable dilator gently through the cervical canal.
- Withdraw it and pass the next size up, using both ends of each piece in turn.
- Stop at the diameter needed for the next instrument, then clean and re-sterilise the set after use.
