How the Mixter forceps is used
In open surgery the Mixter forceps is worked behind a blood vessel to separate it from the surrounding tissue. Once the vessel is free, the jaws take hold of a thread and draw it back around the vein or artery so that the vessel can be tied off. The jaws are shaped to hold the thread without letting it slip, which matters when a ligature has to be passed in a confined space.
