How it is used
After the abdomen is opened, the two fenestrated blades are placed against the wound edges and the frame is spread along its compass until the incision is held open; the lock then keeps that width without anyone holding it. The solid centre blade is fitted at one end of the wound to hold back the bladder or other structures, giving three-point exposure of the pelvis and lower abdomen.
Retracting skin, fat, muscle and viscera in this way gives the surgeon a clear, stable operative field for open abdominal and pelvic operations, and leaves the assistant's hands free for other tasks.
Hardened martensitic chromium steel keeps its shape and spring under load and withstands repeated cleaning and steam sterilisation between operations.
