How the gynaecological gloves are used
A standard surgical glove ends just past the wrist. In delivery rooms and gynaecology theatres many procedures involve the whole hand and part of the forearm, so a glove with a much longer cuff is needed to keep the sterile barrier intact and to keep blood and amniotic fluid off the skin. Typical uses include assisted deliveries, manual removal of the placenta and internal examinations carried out under sterile conditions.
The gloves are shaped separately for the right and left hand, which gives a closer fit around the fingers than an ambidextrous design. The long cuff is drawn up over the gown sleeve so that no gap is left between glove and gown.
