Uses
When a tool cuts metal, the force on it can be resolved into components: on a lathe, the tangential (main cutting) force, the feed force and the radial force; in drilling, the thrust and the torque. These forces set the power needed, the deflection of tool and work, and the tool wear, so they are central to machining theory.
