How the governor experiment is done
A centrifugal governor controls engine speed through the balance between the outward pull on its rotating balls and a controlling force. In the Porter and Proell governors the controlling force comes from a central dead weight on the sleeve; in the Hartnell governor it comes from a compressed spring. As speed rises, the balls fly outward and the sleeve lifts, which in an engine would reduce the fuel or steam supply.
Plotting speed against sleeve lift for each governor gives its characteristic curve. From these curves students judge sensitiveness (the change in lift for a small change in speed), stability (whether each speed has a single equilibrium radius) and governor effort, and see how the Proell's extended arms and the Hartnell's spring change the behaviour compared with the Porter.
- Fit the chosen governor assembly to the main spindle.
- Start the DC motor at low speed and raise the speed slowly.
- At each speed, read the governor lift on the scale and pointer.
- Record readings for rising and then falling speed.
- Change the sliding weight or spring setting and repeat, then plot speed against lift.
