How the grinding force test is done
A grinding wheel removes metal with thousands of small abrasive grains, each acting as a tiny cutting edge with a large negative rake. The resulting force is usually resolved into a tangential component, which sets the power used, and a normal component pressing the wheel and work apart, which affects accuracy, wheel wear and surface finish. In grinding, the normal force is often larger than the tangential force.
The dynamometer is mounted under the work on the grinding machine, so the force of the wheel on the work passes through the octagonal rings. The two indicator channels show the components during the pass, and repeating the test at different depths of cut, feeds, speeds and work materials shows how each parameter changes the grinding force.
- Mount the dynamometer on the grinding machine table and clamp the work piece on it.
- Zero both channels with the balancing potentiometers.
- Set the wheel speed, table feed and depth of cut.
- Make a grinding pass and record both force readings.
- Repeat for other settings and materials and plot force against depth of cut.
