How the venturi flume measures flow
A venturi flume works like a venturi meter laid open: the side walls converge to a throat and the water accelerates. When the contraction is strong enough the flow becomes critical in the throat, where the depth is two-thirds of the specific energy, and the discharge then depends only on the upstream head. For a rectangular throat of width b, Q = b * sqrt(g) * (2H/3)^1.5, where H is the upstream energy head; students compare this with the rotameter reading of the flume.

- Set a steady discharge and note the rotameter reading.
- Measure the water depth upstream of the contraction and in the throat.
