How it is used
Open-channel experiments need a stretch of straight channel for the velocity profile and water surface to settle after the inlet and ahead of a model. On a short section, a hydraulic jump or the backwater curve from a weir can run into the inlet or past the end of the test length. The extension element gives a longer reach in which gradually varied flow profiles, jump positions and uniform flow can be observed without end effects.
The extra length also allows two models to be installed at once, for example a gate followed by a weir, so students can see how one control affects the water level at the other.
Length matters most when measuring a hydraulic jump, which typically extends about six times the downstream depth, or when tracing a water surface profile between a control structure and the end of the channel.
