How the level gauge is used
Almost every open-channel result depends on a depth: the head over a weir, the depth upstream of a gate or the depth at a flume throat. Because weir discharge varies with H^1.5 or H^2.5, a small error in head becomes a larger error in flow, so a fine-resolution gauge makes a real difference to the accuracy of Cd values.
The gauge offers two ways to find the surface. A point tip is lowered from above until it just touches the water, which is easy to see. A hook is raised from below until its tip breaks the surface, which avoids the error caused by surface tension drawing water up the probe.
- Fix the carrier at the measuring point on the flume.
- Lower the probe to the channel bed or weir crest and note the zero reading.
- Bring the probe tip or hook to the water surface and read the display.
- Subtract the zero reading to get the depth or head.
